I'm liquid smooth
The symphonies were buried down before they could be preserved as souvenirs
Women have been subject to internalised sexism, systematic discrimination and industry biases for decades in cultural industries. Female voices in the creative world were swallowed by the silence. The female visionaries in literature, music and cinema were confined to superficial framework. As Women defied systematic restrictions, injustice and exploitation, the barriers began to fall. Over the years, various movements emerged to abolishing the unfair system.
OUTLAW : One of my favourite has been the riot girl movement – Punk-Feminist movement began in 1990s led by Bikini Kill, Brat mobile and Sleater Kinney.
This was a rallying stand against gender inequality. This movement pushed against barriers in alternative and rock genres too. Many female musicians had no control over their own music. A male dominated mass market repressing women’s creative autonomy.
For most of history, anonymous was a woman
Mitski's first self released album lush was released in her junior year and I can't wrap my head around the fact it was for her school project. LUSH has been on my vinyl and I can't get enough of it.Mitski has been loud and vocal about undermining effect of being in this system. She was upfront about enduring burnout, industry pressure and emotional toll of fame. One of her creations "Liquid Smooth" has seeped into my being and consumed me entirely. The song is so beautifully raw that depicts on protagonist's entity. The lines I'm liquid smooth, come touch me too I'm at my highest peak, I'm ripe It emphasise the protagonist's perception of societal norms surrounding women's appearance. The internalised sexism and objectification in their prime centers them to think they're desirable only in their prime. It diminishes their sense of self worth. I think the label "Liquid smooth" depicts how societal beauty standards mold and shape women into specific image. The idea of being like liquid, portrays the pressure to fit into an idealised version of being young and alluring. The song elevates in a disturbing synecdoche that centers on unvarnished truth. A contrast between youth's vitality to phase phase of aging. Let's just say the final word mitski will forever reign in her prime.
